What Makes a Dog Treat Truly "Handmade"

What Makes a Dog Treat Truly "Handmade"?

"Homemade" has become a bit of a buzzword in a world full of smart packaging and  processed pet food.  But what does it mean for dog treats?

We at Snappy Snacks are proud to say "handmade" because every biscuit, every batch, and every bite that makes you go "wow" really is. Not all claims of being "handmade" are the same, though.

Let's show you how a real handmade treat is made and why it's so important for your dog's health, happiness, and trust in what they eat.

 1. It starts with real ingredients, not mixes made in factories.

Most big brands start with powders that are already mixed, animal meals that have been made into powder, or fillers that you can't even say.  We begin with a bowl and a goal.

Every Snappy Snacks cookie starts with:

  •  Whole rolled oats
  •  Cut up fruits or vegetables, like bananas, blueberries, or sweet potatoes.
  •  Coconut oil and flaxseed oil are examples of natural fats.
  •  Seeds like chia or flax to add more nutrients
  •  Ginger is a examples of gentle, useful ingredients.

There are no preservatives, no powdered nonsense, and no base mix. It's just real food that you could put in your own bowl of porridge.

 2. Stirred and mixed by hand

You can feel the dough when you mix it by hand.

  • You know when it's perfect.
  • Too much water?  Put in oats.
  • Too dry?  A little more water.

We change, react, and make choices one batch at a time.  This hands-on method makes sure that every treat stays together perfectly and bakes with the right amount of crunch or softness. It also means that we can see when something isn't quite right before it becomes a problem.  Machines don't have gut feelings.  Bakers do.

 3. Rolled, shaped, and cut one tray at a time

In our kitchen, you won't find conveyor belts or lines for mass production.  We did this instead:

  • Use old-fashioned rolling pins to roll out the dough.
  • For our signature shapes, use hand-held cutters.
  • Place each biscuit by hand on parchment trays.

We can see a crooked biscuit or one that was baked for too long on each tray because they are small.  It doesn't go in the bag if it doesn't pass the "sniff test" or the "would Bow Bow eat it?" test.

 4. Baked the Way Biscuits Should Be

Timing and temperature are important, and not all ingredients bake the same way.  That's why we:

  • Change the baking times for each recipe
  • Check for doneness with your eyes, nose, and hands.
  • Don't force-dry the biscuits; let them cool on their own.

This makes every treat taste like it came from home: golden, rustic, and a little different, just like real food should.

 5. Packed with care (not by a machine)

The same people who baked our treats also packed them.

 We:

  • Carefully count or weigh each batch
  • Check the quality of each treat before it goes into the Box.
  • Put them in handmade boxes that can be recycled and sealed again.
  • Put labels on everything in-house, with care and consistency.

There isn't a warehouse.  No packers that are robots.  Only us. Bow Bow aka Boa Snappy Snack CEO sometimes watches over things, but she really likes taste tests.

 6. What does "handmade" really mean for you and your dog?

Quality: We can keep an eye on every step and make small changes to make sure everything is perfect.
🐾 Freshness: Because we only make small batches, we don't have to store them as long and can bake them more often. You can see what's in it, who made it, and why.
Trust: You're not giving your dog a mystery biscuit from a brand you can't see.
Love: Every single biscuit has a story, a reason, and a dog behind it.

 7. How to Tell if a Treat Is Really Handmade (and Not Just Good Marketing)

When brands say "handmade," here's what to look for:

✅ Clear pictures or videos of the baking process . Some differences in shape or colour (real biscuits aren't perfect!)

✅ Ingredients that sound like real food  Language for small batches, not big factories

✅ Talk directly to the makers

✅  Lists of ingredients that are honest and short  A real story, not just a name

 Last Thought

We think your dog deserves treats that are made with care, purpose, and the right ingredients, just like you would for your family.  No short cuts, no conveyor belts, and no giving in.

"Handmade" isn't just a word at Snappy Snacks; it's how we live.  Real people make your dog's treats in a real kitchen with real love, from the mixing bowl to the postman's van.

When it comes to your best friend's health and happiness, nothing should be made in bulk.
